Intake/Travel Specialist

SAMU First Response is a global medical and social nonprofit organization that provides immediate humanitarian relief to vulnerable populations using a comprehensive and culturally competent approach. Given the migration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, SAMU First Response will be opening an Emergency Respite Center in Rockville, MD to address the acute needs of asylum seekers and migrants passing through the DC area. SAMU will work with local government and partner organizations to ensure that newcomers have access to comprehensive services, including food, clothing, hygiene facilities, respite, and medical/legal support as they travel to their destination.

We are currently looking a Travel Specialist responsible for coordinating and overseeing newcomers’ travel arrangements to their destination cities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting with newcomers to confirm their travel plans. Connecting with sponsors to ensure that newcomers will be met upon arrival.
  • Procuring air, train, bus, taxi, or other transport tickets for newcomers.
  • Providing newcomers with a brief orientation on how to use transportation, if necessary.
  • Liaising with transportation providers to resolve any issues.
  • Accompanying newcomers on transportation, if necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date travel records on newcomers. Ensuring that documentation is properly filed in systems.
  • Identifying gaps/trends and providing recommendations to the Deputy Director.
  • Communicating with newcomers and colleagues in a professional, respectful, and constructive manner.
  • Treating newcomers with dignity and upholding confidentiality at all times.
  • Flexibility to work in different settings including the field.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or relevant discipline and 3 years of relevant experience, or Masters and at least 1 years of relevant experience.
  • Fluency in English and a second language (preferably Spanish, French, or Portuguese).
  • Prior experience working with asylum seekers, immigrants, refugees, or other marginalized populations preferred.
  • Computer proficiency and data entry experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Must be vaccinated for COVID-19 including boosters and able to work in-person in Rockville, MD or elsewhere in the DMV, if necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.

Logistics Specialist

The Respite and Logistics Specialist is responsible for organizing and executing day-to-day operations in the Respite Center. Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that day-to-day respite logistics run smoothly.
  • Communicating and coordinating with vendors regarding supplies and deliveries.
  • Managing and directing volunteers assisting with center logistics.
  • Supporting procurement of center supplies and maintaining appropriate documentation on file.
    Overseeing and managing inventory.
  • Assisting with planning and set-up of Respite Center space.
  • Organizing clothing and supplies, and ensuring that items are distributed in an efficient manner.
    Identifying gaps/trends and providing recommendations to the Deputy Director.
  • Communicating with newcomers and colleagues in a professional, respectful, and constructive manner.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Service Specialist is responsible for providing newcomers with information, guidance, and referrals regarding resources and services that meet their needs in their destination community. Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing intake information and screenings to confirm the service needs of newcomers.
  • Contacting local entities for any urgent/emergency needs while in the Respite Center.
  • Making referrals and linking newcomers to appropriate resources and providers at their destination.
  • Providing orientation on what to expect and how to navigate resources.
  • Ensuring that referrals and notes are entered in the database efficiently and accurately.
  • Developing and maintaining an up-to-date database of resources in destination cities.
  • Identifying gaps/trends and providing recommendations to the Deputy Director.
  • Following up with newcomers as necessary.
  • Communicating with newcomers and colleagues in a professional, respectful, and constructive manner.
  • Treating newcomers with dignity and upholding confidentiality at all times.

Night manager

We are currently looking for a Night Manager to join our team. The Night Manager is responsible for overseeing the Respite Center during overnight shift hours, providing support to newcomers as needed and ensuring that any issues are resolved promptly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring the Respite Center during overnight hours and providing basic support to newcomers.
  • Communicating and coordinating with appropriate local entities in the case of emergencies or urgent needs.
  • Providing guidance and oversight to the overnight security team, as needed.
  • Compiling a brief report out after each shift, documenting any incidents and ongoing matters.
  • Escalating urgent issues to a member of the leadership team.
  • Communicating with newcomers and colleagues in a professional, respectful, and constructive manner.
  • Treating newcomers with dignity and upholding confidentiality at all times.
  • Flexibility to work in different settings including the field
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Fluency in English and preferably a second language (ideally Spanish, French, or Portuguese).
    Candidate must be First Aid and CPR certified.
  • Prior experience working with asylum seekers, immigrants, refugees, or other marginalized populations preferred.
  • Must be available to work weekends.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be vaccinated for COVID-19 and able to work in-person in Rockville, MD or elsewhere in the DMV, if necessary.
